Damascene Swartland Chenin Blanc '24
Damascene's winemaker, Jean Smit, seeks out extraordinary vineyards across the Cape to make wine that encapsulates the remarkable diversity it has to offer. For the 2024 Swartland Chenin showcase, Jean turned to two old vine vineyards – one on the granitic hilltop of the Paardeberg and the other on a sunny slopes of Jakkalsfontein.
A cold, wet winter, and a warm, dry start to summer at both sites set the stage for a dramatic Chenin of tension and depth. Hand‑harvested grapes were picked over seven days, each picking was chilled overnight, hand‑sorted, and gently pressed. The juice was allowed to settle and then transferred to Austrian oak foudres for fermentation and maturation on the lees over 11 months, blending and bottling followed.
Expect a flawless Chenin Blanc with a nose of sunkissed stonefruit and cardamom, a vivid lemon-sorbet and orange zest palate, and a dry finish that whispers of spice and chalk dust.
